Bring both quantities into the same unit
Suppose package A costs 4.50 currency units for 500 g and package B costs 7.20 for 1 kg. Convert B to 1,000 g first. A costs 4.50 ÷ 500 × 100 = 0.90 per 100 g. B costs 7.20 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 0.72 per 100 g.
B costs more to buy as a package but less per equal weight. Relative to A's unit price, B is 20% lower. The basis of 100 g makes the amounts easy to read; using 1 g or 1,000 g would preserve the same ranking.
Keep weight separate from volume
Grams and kilograms measure weight for this comparison; millilitres and litres measure volume. You can convert 1 kg to 1,000 g or 1 L to 1,000 mL directly. You cannot generally turn 500 mL into 500 g without knowing the substance's density.
This matters when packaging uses different measurement families. A sauce sold by volume and another sold by weight cannot be compared merely by copying the numbers into the same column. Find a common declared quantity or reliable product-specific conversion before treating the unit prices as equivalent.
Make package price match package quantity
A multipack of six 250 mL containers holds 1,500 mL altogether. If the price is for the whole multipack, use that total quantity. Pairing the whole-pack price with one container's volume would overstate the unit price sixfold.
Use the actual price available for the quantity you will buy. A promotion may require two packages, a membership, or a minimum order. Include required costs consistently, keep both prices in the same currency, and do not compare one tax-inclusive price with another price that excludes a charge you must pay.
Consider the usable amount and concentration
The printed net quantity is a good starting point, but it may not answer every comparison. For food packed in liquid, drained weight may better match the portion you intend to use. Apply the same definition to both products; mixing net weight and drained weight can distort the result.
A concentrate may produce several times its package volume after preparation. Compare the prepared yield only when the instructions specify it and you can prepare equivalent products. Do not assume that a smaller dose is interchangeable without checking concentration, ingredients, and intended use.
Use the number as one part of the decision
The lowest unit price is helpful only for quantity you will use. If a large package spoils halfway through, the effective cost of the usable half is twice its printed-quantity rate. Storage space, portion size, quality, and convenience can also change which option fits your situation.
Keep calculations unrounded until the final comparison. Two prices that both display as 0.01 per gram can differ meaningfully when shown per 100 g. If the difference is tiny compared with delivery charges or likely waste, consider those practical costs before making a larger purchase.
