Elapsed difference counts the gaps
From September 1 to September 2, one day passes. From September 1 to September 10, nine days pass. Think of the dates as marks on a ruler: the calculation measures the spaces between the marks, not the number of marks you can point to.
That is the convention used by this site's date difference tool. The same start and end date gives zero. If the end date comes before the start, the difference is negative. Keeping the sign is useful when checking whether a date is ahead of or behind a reference point.
An inclusive list counts both endpoints
If you need a list of every date from September 1 through September 10, both endpoints belong to the list. There are ten dates. For a forward interval, that count is the elapsed difference plus one.
Use this adjustment because your task requires an inclusive list, not simply because the result feels one day short. Attendance days, nightly stays, event schedules, and countdowns may use different boundaries. For an obligation or booking, follow the stated counting convention and identify which dates or nights are actually included.
Adding days is not adding months
A day offset advances a fixed number of calendar dates. Adding seven days moves one week forward and includes weekends. Adding 30 days does not necessarily reach the same day of the next month because months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days.
For a monthly recurrence, a separate rule is needed when the original day does not exist in the destination month. A schedule beginning on the 31st might move to the last day, skip a month, or follow another policy. A day-offset result does not decide that policy.
Separate calendar dates from exact times
A local clock can jump forward or backward when daylight-saving time changes. Two consecutive local midnights can then be separated by something other than 24 elapsed hours. A date-only calculation should not accidentally turn that into a fraction of a calendar day.
This tool performs its arithmetic with dates represented at UTC midnight. It consistently counts calendar boundaries, but does not convert a real event time to UTC. To compare flight departures, meeting times, or timed expiry moments, you need timestamps and their time zones.
State exceptions before relying on a result
Business-day counting needs a working-week pattern and a holiday calendar. Neither can be inferred from a bare date. A weekend may not mean the same days for every organization, and a public holiday may apply only in a particular place.
Age calculations introduce another convention. This site's tool measures elapsed calendar time, with month anniversaries based on the original birth date and clamped to the month's final day when needed. February 29 becomes February 28 in a non-leap year. This is not a legal-age determination; record the reference date and convention when the distinction matters.
