How to use this tool
Find how many calendar years, months, and days have passed since a birth date as of a date you choose. This tool measures calendar elapsed time using month-end anniversaries. A reference date lets you check a past milestone or a future anniversary without assuming that today is the date you need. The result does not determine legal age.
- Enter the birth date as a valid calendar date.
- Choose a reference date on or after the birth date.
- Read the completed years together with the reference date. For February 29 births, check the leap-day convention explained below.
The calculation, explained
Birth date: 2000-10-15. Reference date: 2026-09-21.
25 years, 11 months, 6 days
The year numbers differ by 26, but the October anniversary has not occurred by September 21. Under this calendar convention, 25 whole years, another 11 months, and 6 days have elapsed.
Birthdays are a calendar calculation
Dividing total days by 365 is not the same as measuring calendar years because leap years contain an extra day. Month anniversaries are calculated from the original birth date and moved to the last day if the target month is shorter. January 31 to February 28 is one month; the March anniversary is still March 31. Dates use UTC arithmetic without a birth time or birthplace time zone.
The February 29 convention is explicit
For someone born on February 29, this calculator uses February 28 as the anniversary in a non-leap year. In a leap year it uses February 29. That is a defined calculation choice, and another service may use March 1. If the result affects eligibility or an official document, use the applicable rule.
Use the right reference date
An application, school activity, event, or personal record may ask for age on a particular date. Enter that date directly instead of calculating today's age and estimating forward. This result describes completed calendar years; it does not determine a legal threshold, an institution's age category, or an alternative age-counting system.
Questions that come up
What is the age on the birth date?
Zero completed years. The first completed year is reached on the first birthday under the stated anniversary convention.
Can I calculate age on a future date?
Yes. Choose a later reference date to calculate the completed years that will have elapsed by then.
Why can two age calculators disagree?
They may use different reference dates, time-zone assumptions, age systems, or February 29 rules. Compare those settings before assuming either arithmetic is wrong.
