Start by naming the whole
A percentage is a ratio written out of one hundred. If 18 of 60 seats are occupied, the occupied share is 18 ÷ 60 × 100 = 30%. The whole is 60 seats. If another room has 18 occupied seats out of 90, its occupied share is 20%, despite having exactly the same number of people.
Write the denominator beside the result when context might be lost. A statement such as 30% of the 60 available seats tells the reader what was measured. A percentage without a clear whole can make unlike groups appear directly comparable.
Use percentage points for the gap between rates
Suppose a survey response rate rises from 10% to 12%. Subtracting the displayed rates gives 2 percentage points. To measure the relative increase, divide that 2-point gap by the original 10% rate: 2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 20%. The point difference reports the gap; the relative change reports its size compared with the starting rate.
Use labels that preserve that distinction. Saying the rate rose by 2% is ambiguous in this situation. Saying it rose from 10% to 12%, a 2-percentage-point increase, gives the reader enough information to reconstruct the comparison.
Reversing the direction changes the percentage
A value moving from 80 units to 100 units increases by 20 units. Relative to 80, that is a 25% increase. A move back from 100 to 80 loses the same 20 units, but relative to 100 it is a 20% decrease.
This also explains why a 50% decrease requires a 100% increase to recover. Starting at 100, a 50% loss leaves 50. Returning to 100 requires adding 50, which is the entire remaining value. Always use the current starting point for each step.
Stacked discounts multiply remaining shares
If a store applies 20% off and then another 10% off the reduced price, the remaining share is 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72. The combined discount is therefore 28%. On an original price of 100 currency units, the intermediate price is 80 and the final price is 72.
Adding the two discount percentages would incorrectly predict a final price of 70. A fixed-value coupon introduces another operation, so check its position in the retailer's stated order. These calculations compare numbers and do not supply missing coupon or tax rules.
Handle missing or unsuitable baselines honestly
Growth from zero does not have a finite percentage change under the usual formula because division by zero is undefined. Report the actual movement, such as from zero to 15 sign-ups, instead. A small positive baseline is valid but can produce a dramatic percentage from a modest absolute increase.
Negative baselines need a comparison suited to the context and are not supported by this site's percentage-change mode. When reporting a result, retain the starting value, ending value, units, and counting period. That small amount of context is often more useful than additional decimal places.
